Cave as well as rock paintings, Sculptures and petro glyphs of the Upper Paleolithic that dates back some 40,000 years ago have been found, but the correct meaning of this art is frequently controversial because so less is known about the culture that produced them. The oldest art items in the world, a series of minute shells, snail’s bradawl about 75,000 years old, were exposed in a cave in South Africa.

Many immense customs in art have a foundation in the art of one of the great antique civilizations: Ancient Egypt, Persia, Mesopotamia, China, India, Ancient Greece, Rome and the Maya, Inca and Olmeca. Each of these centers of premature civilization enhanced a unique and characteristic approach in their art.

Due to the size and period these civilizations, more of their works of art have stayed alive and most of their influence has spread to other civilizations and later times. Some have also supplied the first records of how artists worked.

For example, this period of Greek art saw a worship of the human physical form and enhancement of equal skills to show musculature, beauty, balance and anatomically right extent. In the medieval as well as Byzantine art of the Middle Ages of Western, a lot of art highlighted on the expression of biblical fact and non-material, and approaches that show the higher unseen magnificence of a heavenly world, such as the use of gold in the background paintings, or glass in mosaics or windows, which also obtainable figures in idealized drawings (flat) forms. However, a traditional realist tradition persisted in small Byzantine works, and practicality was growing in the art of Catholic Europe.

Renaissance art was a much greater importance on the realistic representation of the material world and the position of humans in it, which is reflected in the corporeality of the human body, and developing a systematic method for describing graphical view recession in three-dimensional image space.

In the refusal of oriental art, Islamic iconography led to emphasis on geometric shapes, calligraphy and architecture. Further east, religion dominated inventive styles and forms too. India and Tibet saw emphasis on painted statuette and dance, while spiritual painting rendered many conventions of sculpture and the propensity to bright contrasting colors with emphasis on outlines. China saw the flowering of many forms of art: bronzework, jade carving, pottery (including the striking terracotta army of Emperor Qin), calligraphy, poetry, music, drama, painting, fiction etc. Chinese methods vary greatly from one era to another and each is conventionally the name of the ruling dynasty. The names of Japanese styles subsequent to regal reign too and also saw the linkage stuck between the styles of calligraphy and painting. In Japan from 17th century the woodblock printing became important.
